2021 – Racing During the Pandemic
The 2021 Triathlon of Compassion is different from the event in previous years, but it is still be the same fun, rewarding and worthwhile event that it has always been. For 2021 we have created a race plan that will ensure the health and safety of our participants, volunteers and staff by eliminating gathering points and establishing physical distancing throughout the event.
Pre-race
There will be no race package pick up or bike and helmet check. Race packages will be picked up in transition on the day of the race. Participants will be responsible for ensuring that their bikes and helmets and safe and roadworthy.
Race briefings
There will be pre-race briefings for all participants via the Zoom online meeting platform on Saturday, August 7th. The Kids of Steel briefing will take place at 2:30 and the Adult briefing will take place at 3:30. Participants will be emailed invitations to the briefings.
Day of Race
Transition opens at 6:30 am. Participants will be scheduled to arrive between 1 hour and 45 minutes before their swim heat. Each participant will have a pre-assigned transition spot where their race package will be waiting. Transition will be set up to ensure the flow of participants and to create physical distancing. All participants must wear a face covering up until the start of their race. Race packages will include a disposable face mask that can be discarded as each participant enters the pool to start their race.
Participants will be arranged in heats. Each heat will have a scheduled time to arrive at a cueing area outside the pool. Age group participants will line up 2 meters apart and will enter the pool one at a time on 30 second intervals. The swim will be completed by swimming up and down the right side of each lane and crossing under the lane divider at the end of each lap until the required number of laps have been completed for each race distance.
Transition will be set up so that participants will be spread throughout Transition to minimize the likelihood of contact between participants. There will be a minimum number of marshals in Transition to ensure that participants remain separate.
Participants are required to provide for their own hydration and nutrition needs during the race. There will be no nutrition or hydration provided on the race course.
Following their race each participant will be encouraged to exit the finish area promptly. Gathering will not be permitted at the finish line. There will be no nutrition or hydration area following the race.
Awards
There will be an online awards ceremony at 6 pm on August 8th. Fundraising and place awards will be mailed to recipients following the race. There will not be an awards ceremony at the venue following the race.
